Special issue on Automated Sorting Systems

In issue 285, corresponding to June/July 2023, Logística Profesional spanish magazine featured Juan Francisco Hernando, CEO of JHernando, answering questions in its special issue on Automated Sorting Systems, which provides a brief overview of the sector and the most representative companies in it.

Questions

  1. How do your automated sorting systems improve the speed and efficiency of order processing and fulfilment?
  2. How do you ensure that your systems are compatible with the different types of products, sizes, and materials of each customer?
  3. What challenges do companies face when processing and fulfilling orders, and how do your automated sorting systems address these challenges?

Juan Francisco Hernando, CEO de JHernando

1. Improved speed and efficiency. We have upgraded our traditional parcel sorters, increasing their capacity to sort 4,500–6,000 items per hour, and our envelope sorters to handle 10,000 items per hour.

JHernando manufactures and integrates its products, always seeking to offer the best quality on the market. Our sorting systems are designed to optimise production and significantly reduce errors in data capture and package tracking.

JHernando's experience has enabled us to work with companies in virtually all sectors. Our sorters are particularly prevalent among leading companies in parcel delivery, distribution, ecommerce and logistics, as well as other key sectors such as pharma laboratories and automotive. The fundamental premise in many of these sectors is to seek the greatest possible efficiency and speed in developing operations within logistics and intralogistics processes that strengthen the supply chain.

2. System compatibility – items. At JHernando, we manufacture our own solutions and are committed to providing bespoke logistics solutions for each customer. Before starting a project, our team of engineers meets with the customer and conducts a preliminary study based on the item, its characteristics or the type of material to be sorted. This enables us to work closely with our customers at all times and advise them on the most suitable technology for their processes.

Our sorters are designed to handle a wide variety of package types and sizes. We manufacture compact sorters that can handle everything from the smallest ecommerce parcels to the largest packages sent by parcel delivery companies.

In some cases, however, there is already a proven solution on the market that may meet the customer's requirements. Our company therefore has strategic alliances with international distributors, through which we can supply these solutions from our facilities. We have important collaborations with these distributors, manufacturing complex systems that we then integrate.

Finally, to ensure that each of our solutions functions properly, we carry out a FAT of the technology at our facilities before delivery to the customer. This allows us to adjust it as precisely as possible. We also offer an optional after-sales service that can include preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance work.

3. Systems that are best suited to ecommerce. One of the qualities of ecommerce is its universality. Today, virtually any type of company, from the most local to large conglomerates, can sell and manage their products online. This means that the range of types of packages and items that are classified has increased exponentially over the last decade.

As a result, many companies in the ecommerce sector need to manage increasingly complex items: from fragile technological products to bags of clothing, envelopes or larger standard packages.

To meet this challenge, some manufacturers have developed their own sorting technologies specialised in ecommerce, which take advantage of the sector's needs and turn them into advantages. This is the case with the LR-Sorter and LRH-Sorter, which JHernando distributes in Spain and Portugal. These are two sliding tray sorting systems whose design is perfect for sorting a wide range of typical e-commerce products, maximising the number of outputs in very small spaces. As these sorting systems are specially designed for this purpose, they can be better adapted to customer needs.
